Eight NHL Teams That Should Push Hard for Nikita Kucherov

Eight teams have reasons to pursue Nikita Kucherov, but his July 1 free agency timeline could make a trade a costly rental.

Eight NHL Teams That Should Push Hard for Nikita Kucherov

Nikita Kucherov’s potential availability would put eight teams in a difficult spot: the chance to add an elite scorer is enormous, but so is the risk of paying a major price for a short stay. A panel of The Athletic’s writers placed these clubs in its most aggressive tier, arguing they should pursue him forcefully.

The timing shapes every case. Kucherov is expected to reach free agency on July 1 and is unlikely to commit to a destination before then. A team acquiring him could therefore be spending valuable assets without a clear path to keeping him. That uncertainty makes fit, cap flexibility and the player’s own interest central to any pursuit.

Here’s the appeal for each club—and the obstacle that could stop a deal.

Chicago Blackhawks

Scott Powers’ case for Chicago starts with need. The Blackhawks need difference-makers, and putting Kucherov beside Connor Bedard would give the young center a high-end scoring partner. That combination would be an immediate attraction for a club still building its roster around Bedard.

The harder question is whether Kucherov would choose a rebuilding team at this stage of his career. Chicago’s cap picture is also tighter than it once was, although the club could make room if it decided the opportunity justified the effort. The Blackhawks would need confidence that Kucherov sees a compelling future there before giving up a substantial return.

Dallas Stars

Dallas has spent years trying to turn a strong roster into a championship, and general manager Jim Nill has a reputation for creative deal-making. Kucherov would give the Stars another elite option in an offense that could place him alongside Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson or Mikko Rantanen. That is the sort of top-end addition that could change a team’s ceiling.

The price would be steep, and Dallas has a major financial consideration of its own: Robertson signed a one-year contract this summer worth $12 million and will be seeking a raise. The Stars would have to account for that future commitment while assembling an offer for Kucherov. There’s also a possible fit concern: the roster has no Russian-born players, a detail that could matter to Kucherov as he weighs destinations.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal has been searching for a top-six forward for about a year and has room under the cap next season. Kucherov would address the need with one addition, though the cap space alone wouldn’t settle whether he would want to join the Canadiens.

Arpon Basu points to a personal connection: coach Martin St. Louis played with Kucherov in Tampa, and Basu says the two have strong mutual respect. His view is that Montreal should pursue Kucherov “as hard as humanly possible,” and that the Canadiens will do just that. A familiar coach could give Montreal a useful opening in a conversation where the player’s preferences may decide everything.

Ottawa Senators

Kucherov would lift Ottawa’s offense and make a clear statement about the club’s ambitions in the Atlantic. But the Senators may have to outbid other suitors by a wide margin to get his attention, if he’s interested at all.

Julian McKenzie raises two questions that define the challenge: could Ottawa afford a salary as high as $20 million per season, and would Kucherov want to play there? McKenzie’s recommendation is to prepare for the possibility, since interest can’t be assumed. A plan would let the Senators respond quickly if an opening appears, while the salary figure remains a question rather than a confirmed contract term.

Seattle Kraken

Seattle has depth, but it still lacks a true star. Kucherov would supply a headline player and the kind of elite offensive talent that often separates contenders from teams still trying to establish themselves. His arrival might also affect how other players view Seattle as a destination.

The uncertainty is whether Kucherov would choose the Kraken. Reports that he wants to play alongside another superstar, if accurate, would make Seattle a tougher fit. The club can present the role and the opportunity; it can’t control whether those match his priorities.

Utah Mammoth

Utah can point to a promising young core, prospects on the way and long-term cap flexibility. Adding Kucherov would bring an established star into that developing group and could move the Mammoth’s timeline forward. He could provide an experienced presence while the young players continue to grow.

That mix is appealing on paper, but the same question facing several clubs remains: would Kucherov want to join? Utah’s flexibility gives it room to consider a major move, yet a costly pursuit only makes sense if the team believes it has a credible chance to keep him beyond a rental stint.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto’s championship window may be narrowing, but the team still has reason to explore a rare chance to add a top-five player. Jonas Siegel argues the opportunity is worth examining. Kucherov would bring exceptional skill to a roster built to contend, though the salary mechanics are complicated.

The Maple Leafs are dealing with salary-tagging constraints, and adding Kucherov could create a bind with Auston Matthews. That means Toronto would need to solve the roster and cap implications alongside the acquisition cost. The potential reward is obvious; finding a workable structure is the hard part.

Tampa Bay Lightning

For Tampa Bay, the strongest case is to keep Kucherov. A trade return is unlikely to match what he provides on the ice, and the Lightning need him if they want to keep their championship window open. If the relationship can be repaired, another run together could offer more value than a deal.

That reunion looks uncertain given what Kucherov and his agent, Dan Milstein, have said about his plans. Kucherov feels shunned and may not be willing to forgive. Tampa Bay’s first challenge, then, is whether there’s a path back to mutual trust; if not, the question becomes what return could make parting with a player of his caliber worthwhile.

For all eight clubs, the central calculation is the same: a star like Kucherov can change a team’s outlook, but July 1 could arrive before a trade partner has any certainty about his future. The teams with the strongest cases will need both a convincing hockey fit and a realistic reason for him to stay.
