Blue Jackets’ Hometown Remix Jersey Gets the Details Right but Misses on Color

Columbus’ new sweater has a sharp cannon and thoughtful details, but its gray base clashes with the history the design is meant to celebrate.

Blue Jackets’ Hometown Remix Jersey Gets the Details Right but Misses on Color

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ Hometown Remix sweater has a strong design hiding inside a color choice that’s hard to square with the franchise’s identity. The cannon, striping and close-up details have plenty going for them; the gray base turns a promising tribute into a frustrating half-measure.

The NHL introduced its Hometown Remix series on November 2, 2026, giving all 32 teams a chance to reinterpret the Reverse Retro concept around their fans, local culture and regional history. Columbus will wear its version for 13 games this season. The club describes the sweater as a tribute to the city’s history, community and fabric, but the central color undercuts that pitch.

There’s plenty to like when you look past the base. The cannon is the standout feature, and it makes a compelling case for more prominence in Columbus’ visual identity. The stripes give the jersey structure, while the smaller design touches reward a closer look. It reads cleanly from a distance, too, so the details don’t come at the cost of a strong overall silhouette.

The look also seems to draw from the Blue Jackets’ Stadium Series sweater, one of the club’s best designs. That earlier uniform earned a warm reception, and Columbus won the outdoor game in which it wore it. Yet the team hasn’t brought it back. Whether that choice came from the club or the league, a refreshed version would have had a clear foundation to build on.

Other teams in this series have leaned into familiar visual identities. The Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals are among the clubs revisiting established looks, while the New York Islanders’ design recalls their 1990s sweaters closely enough to invite comparisons. Columbus takes a different route: it keeps some of the Stadium Series’ design language, then changes the palette in a way that feels less connected to the team.

The gray base works against the tribute

That gap matters because the Blue Jackets’ name carries a specific historical reference. The club is named for the Union soldiers’ coats, and the team has built its identity around that connection. Gray, by contrast, brings to mind the opposing side of that history. It’s a choice that asks the jersey to celebrate the franchise’s roots while using a dominant color that points in another direction.

The issue isn’t that every alternate sweater must copy a team’s regular colors exactly. A fresh palette can make a special uniform feel distinct. But here, the change doesn’t add much to the story the jersey is supposed to tell. The result looks attractive as an object, yet the central decision feels disconnected from the historical identity the club says it wants to honor.

There were other routes available. The team could have used white as the main color, as other clubs have turned to white or cream for their designs. That would have left room for a new look while keeping the historical references easier to read. The Stadium Series sweater also offered a ready-made template: retain its successful shape and details, then make modest adjustments for this release.

There’s also a missed opportunity to recognize Columbus hockey beyond the NHL club. A reference to the Columbus Chill could have connected the design to the city’s earlier hockey history. A black, white and silver treatment paired with the cannon might have offered a distinct local feel without leaning on a color that sits awkwardly beside the Blue Jackets’ name.

The club’s social posts framed Hometown Remix as a way to wear the city with pride, and the new sweater has enough visual craft to attract fans who judge a uniform on its own terms. The cannon is memorable, the striping is effective, and the small details give the design character. Those strengths make the base color more disappointing, not less: a better palette could have brought the visual execution and the historical message together.

For 13 games, the sweater will give Columbus a noticeable change of pace. It may look sharper on the ice than the gray suggests in a static image, but the basic question remains: does the design feel like the Blue Jackets? The cannon says yes. The color choice makes the answer harder than it needs to be.
