BU had the puck, the shots and a late rally. UConn had the finish. The No. 15/14 Terriers erased a two-goal deficit to force overtime, then lost 5-4 when Huskies captain Joey Muldowney scored four minutes into the extra period. The result stings; the performance was the fastest and, by one measure, the best BU has put together this season. The defensive errors that made the comeback necessary are harder to overlook.

With BU down 4-2 late in the third, Carter Amico scored the Terriers’ first power-play goal of the season. Then, with goaltender Mikhail Yegorov pulled for an extra attacker, Ryder Ritchie tied the game with 47 seconds left. BU finished with 50 shots, including 34 in the final two periods of regulation, and held a 50-30 edge in shots and a 15-11 advantage in grade-A chances.

“I liked our effort, I like our compete,” head coach Jay Pandolfo said after the game. “Obviously, [it] took us a bit for the puck to go in the net — 50 shots, a lot of grade A’s.” He also pointed to the cost of BU’s first-period mistakes: “A couple of mistakes in the first period cost us. Those things need to be cleaned up.” Pandolfo said he was proud of the group’s work and persistence, while acknowledging the frustration: “They know they deserved better.”

Here’s the thing: BU controlled the puck for the first two and a half minutes of overtime and generated several grade-A looks. Then UConn took over. Muldowney, left alone in the high slot, fired past Yegorov to send the home crowd away happy.

A fast start, then a back-and-forth first

BU’s night opened with a bench minor before the puck even dropped: two Terriers had stepped onto the ice early for warm-ups. BU killed the penalty, but UConn scored a minute later. Ethan Whitcomb drove down the right side, went around Xavier Villeneuve and beat Yegorov short side.

The Terriers found their legs and drew even at 7:39. Ritchie gathered the puck just inside the UConn blue line, carried it below the circle and cut toward the net. Kam Hendrickson stopped his shot but couldn’t smother the rebound. Jack Murtagh got a stick on it before Kamil Bednarik put it in on the goalie’s stick side for his second goal of the season.

UConn went back in front four minutes later. Kaden Shahan stripped Mick Frechette in the neutral zone to start a two-on-one, carried the puck himself and beat Yegorov glove side.

BU couldn’t convert its first power play, which began at the 15-minute mark, despite moving the puck well. It tied the score moments later at even strength. Jonathan Morello won a battle against two defenders behind the goal line and fed Nick Roukounakis, who scored his first of the season. Ben Merrill picked up the second assist.

BU had a 14-12 shot advantage for the period after trailing 8-2 early.

BU had possession; UConn had the period’s only goal

The second period was frustrating for the Terriers. They spent long stretches with the puck and in the offensive zone, but couldn’t turn that control into a goal. On a power play, Caleb Malhotra carried the puck end to end and set up Jack Harvey, only for Hendrickson to rob the BU captain.

UConn broke through on its own power play. Trey Scott moved through the neutral zone and passed to Ethan Gardula, then got behind the defense to take Gardula’s return pass. Scott deked Yegorov and scored to make it 3-2.

BU had two more power plays in the period, but managed only two shots. The Terriers led 12-7 in shots overall.

A late push sends it to overtime

UConn began the third with the remainder of a power play. As Villeneuve left the penalty box, he created a scoring chance, but Merrill couldn’t convert the rebound. BU kept pressing: Roukounakis and Brandon Svoboda were denied on one sequence, and the Terriers spent nearly two minutes cycling the puck in the Huskies’ zone without scoring.

UConn instead stretched its lead to 4-2 at 13:10. Carlin Dezainde skated through the high slot in the BU zone and shot across the grain, beating Yegorov glove side.

With time running down and Yegorov about to come out for an extra attacker, Niklas Aaram-Olsen won a puck battle in the corner and sent the puck to Merrill. Merrill found Amico alone at the center point. Amico’s hard wrist shot went bar down, cutting the deficit to one and giving BU its first power-play goal of the season.

With 2:30 left, Muldowney was called for hooking, giving BU its sixth power play. The Terriers attacked Hendrickson, then pulled Yegorov for a six-on-four. Jack Murtagh’s one-timer from the right circle was defended, but the rebound went across to Ritchie. Ritchie scored from a sharp angle before Hendrickson could seal the post. Conrad Fondrk had the second assist.

BU outshot UConn 22-10 in the third. Ritchie’s late goal sent the game to overtime after his two-goal performance against Vermont.

In the extra period, Hendrickson stopped a Villeneuve attempt and then denied Aiden Celebrini on a drive to the net. A slow BU change gave UConn a three-on-two while it controlled the puck. Muldowney, an All-American two seasons ago, fired through a screen set by Scott and ended the game.

What the numbers say

BU put 15 shots on net across its six power plays, including six on the final advantage, when Ritchie scored. The Terriers gave up their first power-play goal of the season but killed off UConn’s other two opportunities.

Tynan Lawrence’s points streak ended. He won 11 of 17 faceoffs, while BU went 33-for-66 as a team. Ritchie finished with eight shots and drove the offense throughout the game.

BU Oldtimer’s Terrier Takeaway

1. This was comfortably the fastest BU has played this season.

2. It also happened to be the team’s best effort of the season. The Terriers made good exits and got their rushes started, forechecked with purpose, sustained time in the UConn zone, and found ways to put the puck near the net. The power play showed signs of life, too.

3. Several glaring defensive breakdowns undercut all of that. They gave UConn clean, one-on-one chances against Yegorov, and the soft coverage on the Huskies’ third goal was especially costly.

4. Bednarik, Merrill, Celebrini and Ritchie had good games.

5. Yegorov? UConn had him in difficult spots on its regulation goals, including one play where a teammate slid into him as a Huskies player shot. On the overtime winner, he was screened and didn’t react until the puck had passed him. Still, a goalie has to steal a game for his team sometimes. Yegorov didn’t do that here.

6. Lawrence was held off the scoresheet, and BU lost.

7. Malhotra may be close to a breakout despite not recording a point. His end-to-end rush that set up Harvey was dynamic.
